2005 Chamber Chairman David Sher, well known for his folksy often down-to-earch interaction with just about
everyone he meets, had no idea when he presented his dream of a shared regional vision that his comments would
spur the creation of a leadership award--but that's exactly what happened when Sher sat down and shared his
views with Jefferson County Commission President Larry Langford. Sher, along with six others, received the
region's first vision award called "Thinking Outside the Box." Other winners included Dr. Carol Garrison of
UAB; Mayor Scotty McCallum of Vestavia Hills; Dr. Ethel Hall, vice president of the state Board of Education;
Charles McCrary, Alabama Power president; Dr. Albert Sloan, president of Miles College; and Dr. Perry Ward,
president of Lawson State Community College. Each winner received a bronze replica of "The Thinker," a framed
certificate and the invitation to form a the nucleus of a new group charged with creating a list of 100 changes
to improve the Birmingham-Hoover metro area. No details are available yet on meeting dates for the group or
who else may be asked to join.
